Fractional Executives Aren't New in Japan. Fractional Execution Is.

Japan has rented senior judgement for decades under the title of senior adviser. What's new is renting senior execution, and that needs a different contract, a different price and a different search.

Everyone in executive search is talking about fractional leaders this year. CFOs, CMOs, CPOs and Heads of AI work one or two days a week for three or four companies at once. They're on contract, with no equity and no permanent liability. The pitch to companies is simple: senior expertise without the senior commitment.

The trend is real. The novelty is overstated, at least in Japan.

Japanese companies have rented senior experience for decades. Retired executives stayed on as senior advisers or counsellors. Banks and trading houses placed experienced people into client companies. By 2018 the practice was common enough, and opaque enough, that the Tokyo Stock Exchange began asking listed companies to disclose their counsellor and adviser arrangements in governance reports.

So the part-time senior leader is not new here. What's new is what they're accountable for.
