Scout mail スカウトメール

A direct approach sent to a candidate through a Japanese job database. Also written scout message, sukauto, platinum scout.

Japanese mid-career platforms work as two-sided databases. Candidates register a career history, and employers and licensed agencies pay to search it and send scout messages. The volume is heavy. The strongest professionals on the major platforms can receive three to four hundred scout mails in a single month, and dealing with them has become almost a second job.

Platforms have created tiers to help messages stand out. On BizReach, a "platinum scout" from an employer usually comes with a guaranteed interview, skipping the document screen. From a headhunter it guarantees only a meeting with the headhunter, who then introduces roles. Candidates know the difference. They also know which messages are templates sent to hundreds of people and which were written for them.

The law caught up in 2022. Since 1 October 2022, Article 5-4 of the Employment Security Act requires anyone publishing recruitment information, scout messages included, to present it accurately and up to date, and bans false or misleading content. A message that inflates the salary range or hides the real employer breaks that duty.
