The Brewers Won the World Series on the 19th-Biggest Payroll. Here's What HR Can Borrow.
Milwaukee didn't outspend anyone. It out-built them, and the playbook works for hiring in Japan.
The Milwaukee Brewers are world champions. They beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4–1 in Game 5 for the first title in the franchise's 57-year history, and they did it on a payroll that ranks 19th of 30 MLB teams.
On the way, they beat a top-10 payroll in San Diego and swept the Los Angeles Dodgers, baseball's biggest spender. In the final they met a Rays team that spends even less. This isn't a one-season fluke: in 2025, with the 23rd-ranked payroll, they had the best team in the National League.
Most companies in Japan compete for senior hires the way big-market clubs compete for free agents. They chase the proven name, pay a premium, and hope. The Brewers show another way.
